Community Conversation Series Guest Seminar: Democracy in New Haven Today

This event has passed.

As the country celebrates 250 years of independence, the Yale Center for Civic Thought invites members of the greater New Haven community to join Yale students, faculty and staff in a wide-ranging conversation about the history and future of democracy in America. Historians will set the stage for our conversation by sharing lessons from the founding of the country and from the important role that New Haven played in our history.

Together, participants of all ages from New Haven and the city's surrounding towns will discuss the American experiment in self-government – and what we can do together to help that experiment succeed.

We will hold four sessions as part of this series: one dinner forum event that all who are interested in the series should plan to attend and three smaller seminars. Attendees should plan to attend at least one seminar but are welcome to attend all three.

Kick-off Dinner Forum: Monday, March 30th, 6:15-8:45pm

Seminar discussions:

  • New Haven’s Role in America’s Founding | Thursday, April 16, 6-7:30pm | Ives Main Library, Ives Community Program Room (133 Elm St, New Haven, CT 06510)
  • America’s Founding | Wednesday, April 29, 6-7:30pm | Stetson Branch Library  (197 Dixwell Ave, New Haven, CT 06511)
  • Democracy in New Haven Today  | Monday, May 4, 6-7:30pm | Ives Main Library, Ives Community Program Room (133 Elm St, New Haven, CT 06510)

*You do not need to attend the March 30 kick-off dinner to attend any of the above seminars. Complimentary dinner will be provided at all events.

Please note that we aim to assemble a diverse, multigenerational group of attendees from various neighborhoods and towns for this series of conversations about self-government in historical perspective and in our present day. To facilitate discussion, we are limiting the numbers of participants. Please indicate your interest below, and we will confirm that your registration has been successful via email.
